Long-term organic matter and nutrient residence times in the forest floor were estimated using forest floor and above-ground litterfall weights in 23-yr-old and 180-yr-old subalpine Abies amabilis stands. The effect of root turnover in the forest floor on estimates of organic matter and nutrient residence time was determined. If only above-ground litterfall additions are considered in calculating forest floor organic matter and nutrient mean residence time serious errors will result.
