The influence of milk replacer, water or an oral fluid replacer on the absorption of antibiotics in preruminant calves

The influence of milk replacer, water or an oral fluid replacer on the absorption of antibiotics in preruminant calves

Proceedings XIIth World Congress on Diseases of Cattle, the Netherlands Volume I: 301-304

Oxytetracycline, amoxycillin and ampicillin were given by mouth to 64 calves. The drugs were administered in either milk replacer, water or glucose-glycine-electrolyte solution (GGES) and concentrations in serum were then measured. The results showed that absorption of oxytetracycline was greatly impaired by the presence of milk, while amoxycillin was less affected. Administration of the drugs in GGES significantly increased absorption in comparison with either milk or water.
