From calving until the start of the breeding season, 101 autumn-calving Aberdeen-Angus X Hereford cows ranging in age from 3 to 6 years were assigned to either a moderate (maintain post-calving weight) or low (lose 10% of post-calving weight) level of supplementation from calving to the start of the breeding season. From the start of the 67-day breeding season until warm season grasses began to grow, all cows were fed the moderate level of supplementation.
