The weevils Lixellus, Tanysphiroideus, and Cyrtobagous that feed on Hydrocotyle and Salvinia in Argentina

The weevils Lixellus, Tanysphiroideus, and Cyrtobagous that feed on Hydrocotyle and Salvinia in Argentina

Coleopterists Bulletin 362: 279-286

In the course of studies in Argentina in 1971-75, several species of weevils attacking Salvinia and water pennywort (Hydrocotyle spp.) were investigated as potential biological control agents of these aquatic weeds. Lixellus elongatus (Hust.) appeared to feed exclusively on water pennywort both in the field and the laboratory tests. The adults fed on the upper surface of the leaves and the females oviposited in the petioles; in the laboratory they also oviposited in the stolons.
