The activity of amylolytic enzymes, reflecting grain quality, was studied by the falling number method in varietal populations and intervarietal hybrids during 1977-78. Differences between varieties were most marked under conditions favouring sprouting in the ear. Under these conditions, reciprocal differences were found between hybrids in which one parent had a high and the other a low amylolytic activity.
