A different approach to the Argentine ant problem

Citrograph 69(6): 140, 142-143, 146

A different approach to the Argentine ant problem

The biology, injuriousness and control of Argentine ants (Iridomyrmex humilis (Mayr)) on citrus are reviewed, and the results are presented of trials in California in 1983 for their control. Citrus trees in the orchard were skirt-pruned so that the activities of the ants could be observed. Chlorpyrifos (Lorsban) and diazinon were applied in sprays around the bases of the trees at rates determined according to the numbers of ants seen ascending the trunks.
