Adaptation of an immunosorbent technique (ELISA) for the detection of maize rayado fino virus in its insect vector

An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was adapted in Costa Rica to detect maize rayado fino virus (RFV), which is widely distributed in the New World tropics, in its vector Dalbulus maidis (DeLong & Wolc.). The best results were obtained when the experimental procedure included the use of anti-RFV immunoglobulin G (IgG) purified by ion exchange chromatography, the determination of critical concentrations of the enzyme-IgG conjugate, and the use of Tween 20 and bovine serum albumen.
