Of 350 age and sex matched Sudanese children studied, aflatoxins occurred more frequently and at higher conc. in sera of children with kwashiorkor (36.4%) than in children with marasmus (19.3%) or in normal children (15.9%). Urinary excretion of aflatoaxins in kwashiorkor was less than in other groups. Aflatoxins were detected frequently in the following foods obtained from local markets: groundnuts (plain and limed), groundnut butter, chickpeas, haricot beans, sorghum and dried ochra.
