Agreste: region or regions? Recent changes in agriculture in the Northeast

, : Agreste: region or regions? Recent changes in agriculture in the Northeast. Agreste, Agrestes Transformacoes recentes na agricultura nordestina: 196

This study looks at recent changes in the agriculture of Northeast Brazil, particularly within the sugarcane growing and manufacturing industry. After a period of support against production in the Sao Paulo region during the 1970s, the Northeast was again exposed to competition and has declined in importance in consequence. This has led to changes in the local labour markets, where labourers turned away from sugar mills have collected in the cities of the Zona da Mata.
