Field records from 15 herds involved in the Herd Improvement Records programme of the American Angus Association indicated that positive assortative mating in respect of breeding value for weaning weight was being practised. Bias in cow estimated breeding value, caused by non-random mating, was measured as the pooled within-dam regression of dam estimated breeding value on the progeny's sire estimated breeding value deviated from the contemporary sire av. value.
