An outbreak of swine diarrhea of a new type associated with coronavirus-like particles in Japan

An outbreak of swine diarrhea of a new type associated with coronavirus-like particles in Japan

Japanese Journal of Veterinary Science 45(6): 829-832

In February, 1982, a sudden outbreak of diarrhoea occurred on a farm with about 2500 swine, almost all of which were affected within a week. They showed watery diarrhoea and vomiting, and deaths occurred in piglets less than 20 days old. The mortality rate was over 20% among 400 piglets. Older animals recovered in 2-5 days. The direct fluorescent antibody test for transmissible gastro-enteritis virus antigen in small intestine sections was negative, but many coronavirus-like particles were detected by electron microscopy.
