Analysis of native mitochondrial DNA in male-fertile maize mutants resistant to Helminthosporium maydis race T obtained by mutagenic treatments of seeds with Texas cytoplasm

Plants from grains of the line F7 with Texas cytoplasm which had been treated with 2.5 g/litre of ethyl methanesulphonate or 150 Grays gamma rays were crossed with F71, a restorer line for Texas cytoplasm. The resulting progeny were then backcrossed to forms with the same nuclear genotype over several generations. Some mutants were obtained which were both male fertile and resistant to H. maydis (Cochliobolus heterostrophus) race T, both traits being transmitted through the maternal parent.
