A new method of soil analysis developed in Belgium during field trials in 1958-76 is described. Samples are taken during Feb. from 3 levels, 0-30, 30-60 and 60-90 cm depth, and content of N and C are determined together with N indices based on mineral N, humic N, N to be released during breakdown of crop residues and N absorbed in Feb. by young plants. The effects of growth regulators, fungicides and sowing density on N requirements of winter cereals are discussed.
