Crop selection, labor intensity in agriculture, and the timing of births

The paper analyzes short-run fluctuations of the birth rate in a developing country using an explicit optimizing model derived from the theory of household behaviour underlying many cross-sectional studies of fertility. The focus is on the timing and intertemporal substitution of births, and a dynamic economic model of fertility is specified and estimated. The model is developed within the framework of a farm household in an agrarian economy.
