African swine fever: 240-253



DNA from Vero cell-adapted African swine fever (ASF) virus isolates was extracted and characterized by two restriction endonucleases, SmaI and EcoR-I. Both enzymes could distinguish between the ASF isolates Lisbon 60, V-6, Haiti, Brazil and the Dominican Republic; however, the number of differences was greater with EcoR-I. It is suggested that field isolates could first be screened with SmaI for a general grouping, and then with EcoR-I to detect differences in DNA restriction patterns.
