Metribuzin at 0.0625 and 0.125 p.p.m. in Hoagland sol. at seed imbibition significantly influenced dark respiration in tomato Campbell 28. Dark respiration determined via infrared gas analysis in an open system increased with 0.0625 p.p.m. treatment by 9%, 10% and 12% at 21, 28 and 35 days, resp. The 42-day dark respiration rate with 0.0625 p.p.m. treatment was depressed by 2%. This may suggest a net gain in plant carbohydrate reserves after 42 days.
