In field trials in Sao Paulo, sorghum was given 0, 40, 80 or 120 kg N/ha as ammonium nitrate (a) at sowing, (b) 50% at sowing + 50% at apical differentiation or (c) 50% at sowing + 50% at the boot stage. N application did not significantly increase grain production but did shorten growth cycles.
