Effect of replacing soya-bean meal by fish meal on milk production by Friesian cows on commercial farms

Cows averaging 66 and 57 days of lactation on 2 farms resp. were given either (i) 0.83 kg selected fishmeal (FM) + 0.42 kg sugarbeet pulp/day or (ii) 1.25 kg soyabean oilmeal (SBM)/day. Cows averaging 78 days of lactation on a 3rd farm were all given FM initially; group (i) continued to receive 0.544 kg FM + 0.363 kg barley/day while group (ii) received 0.907 kg SBM + ad lib. grass silage.
