In a field trial on chernozem soil, 2 maize hybrids were given 0, 60, 90, 120 or 150 kg N/ha and grown at spacings of 70 x 30, 70 x 25 or 70 x 15 cm. N increased yield significantly, with no significant difference between N rates. Seed yield increased significantly with increase in plant density. In studies of the dynamics of seed yield formation, 41.8-45.7% of the yield was formed during the grain formation stage, 49.0-56.7% at the milk-ripe stage and 3-5% at the wax-ripe stage.
