Effect of sulphur fertilization on yield response and sulphur and nitrogen composition of rice grown in the soils of Kanpur district
In greenhouse trials, 20-day-old seedlings of rice IR 8 were transplanted into 24 alluvial soils, differing widely in available S content, from the Kanpur district of Uttar Pradesh. On 12 soils, application of 50 p.p.m. S increased grain yields by <more or =>10%, the highest increase being 30%. S application increased total N and S contents of lamina, shoot, grain and straw and reduced the N:S ratio. Most deficient plants contained less than 0.16% S in lamina and shoot at tillering.
