This paper describes the effects of nitrogen broadcast before drilling, at drilling, and at various stages after drilling on plant establishment, nitrogen uptake and growth, and on yield. The value of a special machine which placed the nitrogen alongside the sugar beet rows was also investigated. The paper concludes that much greater care over nitrogen fertiliser application is necessary now that the crop is planted to a stand.
