Effects of manual and chemical control of lateral shoots on the growth of young ornamental trees

Effects of manual and chemical control of lateral shoots on the growth of young ornamental trees

Journal of Horticultural Science 59(1): 45-50

Hand tipping or removing lateral shoots from the main stem of Malus 'Profusion' and Malus 'Red Jade' increased the growth of the tree head and the girth of the upper part of the main stem. Maintaining a completely clear stem on 'Red Jade' from bud burst onwards reduced the girth of the lower part of the main stem but this treatment was the most effective in increasing both the girth of the upper part of the stem and shoot growth in the tree head. All hand treatments reduced main stem taper in 'Profusion' and 'Red Jade'. Hand tipping lateral shoots of M. floribunda, Tilia euchlora and Sorbus aucuparia 'Sheerwater Seedling' was compared with applications of butralin and daminozide. Butralin treatment of laterals on M. floribunda increased shoot growth in the tree head and increased stem thickening, but neither tipping nor chemical treatment benefited growth or form of T. euchlora or S. aucuparia.
