A series of experiments using pear and juniper hosts of G. fuscum, conducted in 1973-1983 in southwestern British Columbia, where the trellis rust disease is established in certain areas, provided information for use in establishing a nursery stock certification program. Heavily infected junipers were detected by the presence of leaf infections on indicator pear trees provided the junipers were within 150 m of an indicator tree. Light infections on juniper would be detected only if the pear trees were closer than 150 m to the source of inoculum. Aeciospores from pear leaf infections were shed between the end of Aug. and leaf fall, and were dislodged in large numbers by rain showers, the majority being shed between 1300 and 1800 h. Roto-Rod aeciospore trap counts 30 m from the source were only 2% of those 1.5 m from the source. Oxycarboxin applied to juniper prior to the formation of telia and to pear before the maturation of aecia markedly delayed the production of basidiospores and aeciospores. Mancozeb was an effective protectant when applied to juniper at the time of aeciospore release from pear. Differences in susceptibility among species and cultivars of junipers were observed. An integrated program combining the use of indicator pear trees, removal of infected pear leaves prior to aeciospore release, and protective applications of mancozeb would allow junipers to be grown safely within 100 m of lightly infected pears.
