Equations for estimating above-ground phytomass in the understory of Appalachian oak forests

Regression equations were developed for estimating total above-ground biomass for 17 tree and shrub species in the understorey of second growth forests in SW Virginia. All possible combinations of 3 functional forms of the equation and 3 independent variables (stem b.a., total ht. and crown diam.) both singly and in all combinations. A linear model with stem b.a. as the independent variable provided the best fit to the data for 15 species.
