Four extractants, DTPA, EDTA, 1N NH4OAc and 0.1N HCl, were evaluated for their ability to predict Zn and Cu deficiencies in nine Saskatchewan soils using alfalfa as a test crop. The DTPA test was the most suitable as an index of Zn deficient soils with a critical value for Zn deficiency (giving less than 90% of maximum yield) of 1.1 mu g/g of soil. Although the results obtained for Cu were inconclusive, preference is given to the DTPA test for routine analyses.
