In a study of 64 single crosses involving eight male and eight female parents showing genetic divergence, crosses between parents with intermediate divergence showed high F1 heterosis. Half the males as well as half the females were high (H) in general combining ability for a range of characters and the other half low (L). H X H parental crosses showed higher frequency and magnitude of heterosis than H X L or L X H.
