Genetic variability and inheritance of drought tolerance mechanisms in rice Oryza sativa L. 1. Development of the root system

Genetic variability and inheritance of drought tolerance mechanisms in rice Oryza sativa L. 1. Development of the root system

Agronomie Tropicale 38(2): 110-117

Twenty varieties (two belonging to O. glaberrima and one to O. breviligulata) and 20 F1 O. sativa hybrids from a diallel cross amongst five of them were studied using aeroponic culture for root length between 3 and 9 weeks and for 11 other characters. Marked variation was observed in root morphology and development amongst the 20 varieties, not only between rainfed and aquatic varieties but also amongst the former. Rainfed varieties from Africa generally had the deepest and most dense roots.
