High and low yielding testers for general combining ability in inbred maize lines

In an investigation of topcrossing as a means of assessing general combining ability (GCA), eight inbred lines previously selected for low GCA and eight selected for high GCA were pollinated by four testers derived from two open-pollinated varieties by divergent selection for low and high yields. The variation in yield was greater in the progenies of low-yielding than of high-yielding testers, and interactions were stronger in such crosses, whether the seed parents were of low or high GCA.
