Implications of new coffee technology in Central America

Implications of new coffee technology in Central America

Desarrollo Rural en las Americas 14(2): 63-71

This paper analyzes the potential impact of new coffee technology on the Central American republics (except Panama). Given the importance of coffee to their economies, changes in cultivation techniques can be expected to affect such economic variables as rural employment and land tenure systems. Using Central American and Colombian data, the paper argues that the new technology will reduce coffee employment and induce land consolidation.
