In vitro and in vivo inactivation of penicillin by penicillinase from Staphylococcus aureus of bovine mammary origin
A penicillinase-producing strain of Staphylococcus aureus was isolated from normal bovine udder. The penicillinase hydrolysed benzyl penicillin, penicillin V and ampicillin during incubation at 37 degrees C for 60 min, but had no effect on cephalosporin or cloxacillin. A crude enzyme preparation inhibited the effects of penicillin in vitro, and inactivation of penicillin was also demonstrated in vivo using mice challenged with Bacillus anthracis.
