In vitro studies on the effect of zinc oxide and titanium dioxide on dermatophytes

Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide were tested for their inhibitory effect on Epidermophyton floccosum, Trichophyton rubrum, T. mentagrophytes and Microsporum canis using agar plates with conc. of 1, 5, 10 and 20% of each substance. While zinc oxide inhibited growth of the dermatophytes in correlation to the conc., no such effect could be demonstrated for titanium dioxide, even at 20% conc.
