In field trials in 1980-2 at 23 sites and on 5 soil types, winter wheat, barley and rye were given N at rates in the range 0-130 kg/ha split between late autumn or Feekes stage 3-4 (start of vegetative growth) and Feekes stage 7-8. Effects of treatments varied between soils and yr, but autumn applications in general proved unsatisfactory.
