Inheritance of glume color and gluten strength in durum wheat

In crosses of two weak-gluten, brown-glumed lines with a strong-gluten, white-glumed cultivar, glume colour showed simple inheritance and estimated heritabilities for gluten strength were 60 and 53%, respectively. Selection for strong gluten in the F2 produced an increase in the F3 of 106% of the predicted gain. White-glumed lines had a higher mean and greater variability than brown-glumed lines in the F3.
