International hybrid maize trials as a source of initial stock for maize breeding

Proceedings of the tenth meeting of the Maize and Sorghum Section of Eucarpia, 17-19 September 1979, Varna, Bulgaria: recd 1983; 118-120

A scheme is proposed which involves: (1) analysing Eucarpia variety trials results and selecting the most stable productive hybrids; (2) testing these hybrids for combining ability; and (3) developing inbred lines from hybrids showing high heterosis. Selections from the 1976 Eucarpia trials were crossed in diallels and grown at three localities in the USSR.
