Isolation and partial characterization of a calcium-dependent endoribonuclease of Trypanosoma brucei cytoplasm

A Ca2+-dependent ribonuclease from T. brucei was isolated and partially characterized. It had no DNase activity and had a molecular weight of about 19 500. Optimum pH was 8.0. Activity was abolished by 20 mM EDTA or EGTA. Its isoelectric point was 9.0. Poly(A), poly(C), poly(U), yeast tRNA and ribosomal RNA were all degraded by the enzyme, although poly(A) was the preferred substrate.
