Abstract
On the basis of a study of specimens collected across West Africa, natural hybridisation between Simulium sanctipauli Vajime & Dunbar s.l. and S. squamosum (End.)/S. yahense Vajime & Dunbar was shown to occur at a rate of around 0.001. A single larva was found which was clearly a backcross between S. sanctipauli s.l. and a S. sanctipauli s.l. X squamosum/yahense hybrid. This discovery indicates the possibility of genetic introgression between these species.
