Nutrient content of four rosaceous hosts and their effects on development and fecundity of the eastern tent caterpillar, Malacosoma americanum (Fab.) (Lepidoptera: Lasiocampidae)

, : Nutrient content of four rosaceous hosts and their effects on development and fecundity of the eastern tent caterpillar, Malacosoma americanum (Fab.) (Lepidoptera: Lasiocampidae). Canadian Journal of Zoology 61(12): 2868-2872

Larvae of Malacosoma americanum (F.) that were reared in the laboratory in the USA on crab apple (Malus sp.), apple, black cherry (Prunus serotina) and pin cherry (P. pensylvanica) differed in development time and survival. Fecundity and pupal weight were also affected. No direct relationship was found between nutrient levels (nitrogen, carbohydrate and fatty acid) in host-plant foliage and developmental parameters.

Cows were judged to be pregnant if, 20 to 21 days after artificial insemination, the plasma progesterone exceeded 1.5 ng/ml. The validity of diagnosis from this test depended on insemination being carried out at true oestrus. Induction of oestrus...
