Nutritional and physiological factors affecting lactation

Federation Proceedings 43(9): 2430-2431

Nutritional and physiological factors affecting lactation

A brief introductory paper to a 1983 symposium discusses nutritional factors that affect milk secretion and the mechanisms through which such factors act. An historical review of the topic is developed, leading up to research findings of the past 2 decades. A diagram of 5 milk secretion pathways is presented, and the specific pathways discussed. Most of the pathways are transcellular in nature. Highlights of several key papers of the symposium also are discussed. (wz)

Milk production is largely related to the shape of the lactation curve. Key elements of the lactation pattern are peak yield, which is the maximum daily yield reached during lactation, and lactation persistency, which is the medium rate of milk y...

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of culture conditions on extracellular protease biosynthesis by Streptomyces spp. G157. It was found that there was optimum expression of extracellular proteases in a medium of soyabean meal...

Although the effect of lactation stage is similar, the responses of milk yield and composition (fat and protein contents) to different types of lipid supplements differ greatly between goats and cows. Extracellular protease production by Clostridium bifermentans NCTC 2914 occurred throughout the growth phase in batch culture. In both glucose-excess and -limited chemostats, protease formation was inversely related to the dilution rate, over the...
