Nutritional status, parasitic infections and health of roadworkers in 4 areas of Kenya. 1. Kwale District - coastal lowlands

Examination of 367 men in Kwale District in the coastal lowlands of Kenya is reported. Many of the workers had evidence of undernutrition as judged by anthropometry. About 41% of men had haemoglobin below 13 g/100 ml. Faecal samples showed eggs of hookworm in 69% and of Trichuris trichiura in 47%. About 40% of men had Schistosoma haematobium ova in their urine and 26% had Plasmodium spp. in a single blood film.
