Nutritional supplements for low birth weight infants

New Zealand Medical Journal 97(760): 489-492

This paper deals with vitamin-mineral supplements for infants with birthweight between 1250 and 2500 g, including small-for-dates term infants as well as preterm infants. Recommended intakes for water-soluble vitamins, fat-soluble vitamins and minerals are discussed in relation to amounts supplied by infant formulas and human milk. The value of preterm human milk as a source of nutrients for low birthweight infants is discussed briefly.
