Phaonia signata (Meigen) (Diptera: Muscidae) larvae predatory upon leatherjackets, Tipula paludosa (Meigen) (Diptera: Tipulidae) larvae

Entomologist' s Gazette 35(1): 53-55

Larvae of Phaonia signata (Mg.) were found preying on larvae of Tipula paludosa Mg. in grassland in England in May-June 1981 by attacking them and feeding inside them. The percentage of tipulid larvae containing larvae of the muscid increased from 3.4 on 7 May to 22.4 on 9 June. Muscid larvae attacked more than one tipulid larva in the laboratory.
