Prevalence of Coxiella burnetii : seroepidemiological investigation in domestic animals and veterinarians

In a survey of 5277 randomly selected animal serum samples and 1634 pooled milk samples from 824 dairy herds, 122 (31.4%) of 388 dogs, 138 (6.6%) of 2083 cattle and 109 (3.9%) of 2806 sheep had complement fixing antibodies against Coxiella burnetii. In capillary agglutination tests, 362 (43.9%) of the dairy herds were shown to be infected. Of 175 veterinarians tested as sentinels for high risk populations, 45 (25.7%) had serum antibodies.
