Response of ponderosa pine and lodgepole pine to fertilization

Increases in volume growth of up to 75 percent for ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa Dougl. ex Laws.) and up to 100 percent for lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta Dougl. ex Loud.) have been obtained on fertilized study pots in thinned, pole-sized stands. Responses are primarily due to nitrogen; but sulfur, phosphorus, and potassium may also be important on some soils. Some pole-size stands of ponderosa pine have not responded to nitrogen fertilization.
