In a brief outline of Soviet breeding work in this region of European Russia, promising breeding material is listed, including sources of short lodging-resistant straw, resistance to Ustilago nuda (carrying Un genes, notably K26419 with Un8), Erysiphe graminis, Helminthosporium gramineum and H. teres, and high protein content. A new Ethiopian source of high lysine and protein content (K21849) has been found at the Vavilov Institute of Plant Industry (VIR).
