Results and trends of CMS use in maize breeding

Since 1967 all promising lines at Krasnodar, USSR, have been converted to Texas (T) or Moldavian (M) type cytoplasmic male sterility. Data are presented on the yields of hybrids with normal (N) cytoplasm and corresponding crosses to T and M types, using at least 102 lines during 1963-1978. M hybrids were more productive than T hybrids and both outyielded the N hybrids. In 1976 and 1977, the cytoplasmically male-sterile counterparts of double crosses outyielded those of single crosses.
