One tablet of Fansidar (500 mg sulphadoxine and 25 mg pyrimethamine) was given weekly to 86 Europeans working in Nigeria for periods of 6 to 18 months as malaria prophylaxis; 87 controls received chloroquine. Side-effects were infrequent and occurred at the same rate in both groups. In addition to the occasionally occurring cutaneous and visual disturbances, the Fansidar group tended to suffer intestinal and the chloroquine group sleep disturbances.
