Revegetation of lands surrounding the Bell Bay smelter

Revegetation of lands surrounding the Bell Bay smelter

Fluoride emissions Their monitoring and effects on vegetation and ecosystems: 207-215

The main factor in the decline of the dry sclerophyll forest in the locality of the Bell Bay smelter appears to be the increased frequency of fire resulting from increasing human activity in this area. Other factors include fluoride emissions, removal of vegetation giving protection from salt-laden winds, and presence of root-rot fungi. Comalco Aluminium Ltd. has undertaken to protect and improve the forest. Fire control measures have been adopted and a rural fire brigade formed.
