Sex ratios of Melanoplus sanguinipes and other Acrididae (Orthoptera)

Sex ratios of Melanoplus sanguinipes and other Acrididae (Orthoptera)

Journal of the Kansas Entomological Society 564: 457-465

Melanoplus sanguinipes F., which attacks wheat, was reared in the laboratory in North Dakota. The sex ratio of 74 egg pods varied from all male to all female, with an overall ratio of half males and half females in each pod. In weekly field collections, the ratio changed from equal numbers of the sexes (of young hoppers early in the season) to female-dominated ratios (of adults, later in the year).
