Penetration of solar radiation into the leaf canopy of soyabean Zora and Norman was studied in stands at densities of 222 222-1 333 333 plants/ha. Light intensity in the lower 33% of the canopy was an important factor in seed yield formation. Loss of production from individual plants was directly related to loss of effective photosynthetic area through shading at high plant densities.
