Streptococcosis caused by group R streptococci in swine. Its importance, possibility of transmission to man. A zoonosis of the future

Streptococcosis caused by group R streptococci in swine. Its importance, possibility of transmission to man. A zoonosis of the future

Bulletin de l' Academie Veterinaire de France 56(3): 331-338

Attention is drawn to the increasing prevalence of streptococcal septicaemia in pigs in France, especially in Brittany, where there are many large intensive pig farms. Of 273 streptococcal strains isolated from affected or dead pigs during 1982-83, 48.3% were of group R. The clinical picture varied from nervous, respiratory or locomotor disorders to sudden death. The organism was also recovered from apparently healthy carriers.
